Lyrics

Won't the Devil Dance With Me

She looked right across the room
At the face of a haunting groom
Her aim was always high
Why should she live this lie

He beckons another ale
This time it’s him was pale
In search of his honesty
In his life it cannot be

[Chorus]
Won’t the Devil dance with me no
Ooo ooo
Won’t the Devil hold me still, oh
Ooo ooo
Will it never come to be, oh
Ooo ooo
Won’t the Devil dance with me no
Ooo ooo

She bed him farewell that night
And bed him ‘till morning light
Then came a knock on the door
Of the wife and a face of scorn

He cried of witch’s eyes
That cursed him to commit such crimes
The wife didn’t really mind
She’ll burn all the same just fine

[Chorus]

As she went up in smoke
She scribbled the words in coal
The Devil may have his dance
But the last laugh will be by her hands

He stumbled home that night
With another that’s not his wife
The girl she knew of his deeds
And the devil broke at his knees

The wife she came in behind
With a knife and a dark red mind
She broke him right through the heart
And then burned to Ash entwined

[Chorus]

The Watchmaker

[Chorus]
The Watchmaker sings his song
Watch now it won’t be long
The Watchmaker sings his song
This world is all but done

The times are nigh
In his never-ending mind
So we keep warm
The suffering endures

A field of green
Burning as dream
The homes so black
The days not coming back

[Chorus]

She cries to him
For an ending to begin
Turn from it all
An offering to hold

He breathes out loud
It is not enough somehow
She grabs the knife
And readies for the strike

[Chorus]

She struck the heart
Or the empty void in part
He looks at her
With a tear upon his face

It was all too much
I never wanted more
Please hold me girl
The hands of time are still

Coming Up Behind Me

[Chorus] x 2
I know he is
He’s coming up behind me
I know he is
He’s coming up slow
I know he is
He’s coming up behind me
Ooo, and I’ve got to go

I said she’s not your wife, sir
I said that she’s on her own
You know that it’s on my mind sir
Oh, for to take her home

That night, when you broke in the doorway
That night, so bitter and cold
You shot me right through the shoulder
Oh, so I’m leaving in the morn’

[Chorus] x 1

Set sail, on to the next one
Set sail, out from the cove
I’m sure that I’m on my own now
Oh, but then you’re in tow

I said, set the cannons up now
I said put them all in a row
You sir, fill the cannons up now
Ooo, and make them blow

[Chorus] x 1

Young sir, throw the colours high now
He may not notice me
I knew it was wishful thinking
Oh, on this vengeful sea

I shot, right down the barrel
I shot but I missed the feat
He shot, straight through my head now
Oh, that’s the end of me

[Chorus] x 2

Jumbled Crooked Lines

Earth may shudder, but here lie you and I
Faces turned the other way, looking to the sky
Where all the clouds are cast in ruby red today
Forming flowers with their petals slowly curling into grey
And as they fall, in stark relief the stillness stands
To the planes once circling searching for a safer place to land

Cracking pavement is a mirror of crumbling
Broken walls that grin and gesture toward the huddled mumbling
Chosen few, who for the vesture cast their lots
Betting all to find the favour of a nearly empty pot
That steams and boils with remnants of a mystery
Left embroiled in confusion, calling who did this to me

[Chorus]
We watch the sky reflecting just the rain
Filling furrows in the fields of this barren plain
Where we tried to fix these jumbled crooked lines
Calling what’s yours is nothing, what’s yours is mine
And now…

Time to stand our ground: it’s time to really try
To turn our insight upside down and never wonder why
The drops are red though they hardly hit the clay
That once was fired and formed the framework of a soft ceramic day
And still contains the ashes of a memory
Mostly yours but then perhaps it was all the same to me

[Chorus]
We watch the sky reflecting just the rain
Filling furrows in the fields of this barren plain
Where we tried to fix these jumbled crooked lines
Calling what’s yours is nothing, what’s yours is mine
But now…
